It’s vacation time! Finally.

Hopefully, you have a much-needed break from everything on the books. But that may also mean that you’re preparing to spend some time apart from your dog, whether hiring a house-sitter or making reservations at a dog resort.

Whether you’re an old pro at this, or spending time apart from your dog for the first time, here are just a few tips to make the transition as simple and stress-free as possible:

  1. Spend some quality time together. Soak up some love to keep you buoyed before you hit the beach. Go for a long walk or jog with your pet. Hit the dog park. Toss a ball around. Make sure you both get plenty of exercise. Then pick up some awesome new (and distracting) toys at the pet shop – a hide-a-treat or a KONG – before the big day. (They’ll come in handy.)
  2. Find a phenomenal pet resort: Not all pet care centers are created equal. So, seek out a facility that prides itself on providing luxury accommodations, from bedding to housekeeping and more, and is complimented by a comprehensive roster of activities to fit your dog’s unique needs. Once you’ve settled on lodging, be sure to provide the pet resort with any important information about your dog, from diet to personality and beyond. If your dog tends to get anxious when you are separated, let the caretakers know. If possible, visit the pet resort in advance with your dog to familiarize him with the environment.
  3. Don’t drag out the goodbyes. Just like dropping off a toddler at their first day of preschool, it’s best to keep the “so longs” short and sweet. Most importantly, lead by example. Sure, you’re going to miss your dog while you’re away just as much as (if not more than) he misses you. But you’re also both going to have a great time and get some much-needed R&R. So put on that brave face and be excited for your pet as he embarks on a new adventure.
